Connecting to HMRC

To submit your tax returns under Making Tax Digital, you need to authorise access with HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) using your National Insurance Number and Government Gateway login details.

Step 1: Enter Your National Insurance Number (NINO)

On the Set up Making Tax Digital screen:

  1. Make sure you’re on Step 1 – Authorise with HMRC

  2. Enter your National Insurance Number (NINO) in the field provided

    • Example format: QQ123456B

  3. Click Authorise now

This starts the secure connection process with HMRC.


Step 2: Sign in to HMRC (Government Gateway)

After clicking Authorise now, you’ll be redirected to HMRC’s secure login page.

You will need to:

  • Enter your Government Gateway User ID

  • Enter your Password

  • Complete any 2-step verification if prompted (SMS or authenticator app)

You are logging in directly with HMRC. Your credentials are not stored by us.


Step 3: Grant Authority

HMRC will ask you to confirm that you want to:

  • Allow the software to view relevant tax information

  • Submit updates under Making Tax Digital for Income Tax

Click Grant authority (or similar wording) to approve the connection.


Step 4: Confirmation

Once authorised:

  • You’ll be redirected back to the app

  • Step 1 will show as completed

Your account is now connected and ready for Making Tax Digital submissions. Nexus will start to retrieve your tax obligation statuses from hereon.
