Inviting an Accountant to Your Nexus Account

How to invite your accountant to your Nexus account, what they can and cannot do, and how to resend an expired invite or remove their access.

Written by Oliver Chiang

If you work with an accountant, you can invite them into Nexus so they could have visibility of your account. This guide explains how to send the invite, what your accountant can access, and how to remove them when you no longer need their help.

What you need to know

  • Only the account owner can invite an accountant. If you cannot see "User & permissions" in the main menu, ask the account owner to send the invite.

  • You will need your accountant's email address. Use the address they sign in to Nexus with if they already use it.

  • Someone who is already a Standard User on your account, or who owns your account, cannot also be invited as an accountant.

What your accountant can do

An accountant has the same access as a Standard User. They can:

  • See and edit every property and transaction in your account.

  • Connect to HMRC using their own tax agent account.

  • Submit your MTD quarterly updates on your behalf, if they established the connection using their agent account.

ℹ️ There is no partial access. Your accountant will see every property and every transaction in this account, so only invite someone you are happy to share your full portfolio with.

Invite your accountant

Step 1: From the main menu, select "User & permissions".

Nexus will show everyone who has access to your account, split into "Active" and "Invited" tabs.

Step 2: Select "Invite user" in the top right of the page.

Nexus will open the invite form.

Step 3: Enter your accountant's first name, last name and email address.

Step 4: Choose "Accountant" as the role.

Step 5: Select "Send invite".

Nexus will email the invite to your accountant and add them to the "Invited" tab with a status of "Pending".

What happens when your accountant accepts

Your accountant receives an email inviting them to your Nexus account. What happens next depends on whether they already use Nexus:

  • If they already have a Nexus login, your account is added to their client list and they can switch to it straight away.

  • If they are new to Nexus, they create a login and set a password before they can view your account.

Once they accept, they move from the "Invited" tab to the "Active" tab.

Connecting to HMRC as an accountant

Your accountant can connect Nexus to HMRC using their own HMRC agent account rather than your Government Gateway login. Once they do, only your accountant can submit MTD updates for that connection. You and any other users on the account will still see the figures but will not be able to submit them.

Remove your accountant

Step 1: From the main menu, select "User & permissions" and open the "Active" tab.

Step 2: Find your accountant and select the delete icon on their row.

Step 3: Confirm that you want to remove them.

Nexus will end their access immediately. Your account will disappear from their client list.
